The fifth “Heat Transfer Photogallery” was held at the 2000 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exhibition in Orlando last November. The Heat Transfer Visualization Committee sponsored the session and attracted 13 photo displays that illustrate phenomena that occur in the presence of a temperature gradient. Six entries were selected for publication in this special section of the ASME JOURNAL OF HEAT TRANSFER.
The purpose of publishing these photographs is to draw attention to the innovative features of optical diagnostics and aesthetic qualities of thermal processes. To focus on the visualization, the text is kept to a minimum and further details should be found through the listed references or directly from the authors. The photographs include visualizations of the following: (1) the effect of the pore diameter, ranging from 10-mm to 10-μm, on the capillary thermal and flow fields; (2) molecular dynamics simulations for atomic force microscope visualization; (3) comparison of boiling bubble characteristics between 1-g and reduced gravity at 0.05-g; (4) oscillatory flow forced convection and mixing inside a micro heat spreader; (5) entrained drop formation from electrohydrodynamically driven oscillatory annular flow; and (6) mapping of local surface heat transfer coefficients with and without vortex-generating winglets. It is now proposed that the journal readers enjoy viewing these collections, acquire knowledge of the state-of-the-art features potentially applicable for their own research, and promote their participation in 2001-IMECE Photogallery session presentation (refer to the Call for Photogallery for 2001-IMECE announced in this volume) 1,2,3,4,5.
