The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a one-year-long full-time position at the rank of Lecturer. The position is renewable depending on future teaching needs, availability of funds, and performance. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, as well as a strong commitment to outstanding teaching and advising of students at the undergraduate and Master’s level. We particularly seek candidates with teaching, research, and/or practical experience that can be applied to instruction in mechanical design, mechatronics, robotics, experimentation, and instructional laboratory courses.

The anticipated teaching load will be four courses per year. The Lecturer’s main responsibility will be high quality student-centered teaching, including course preparation, delivery, and assessment. The Lecturer will also participate in the academic advising of students, and will be given the opportunity to participate in departmental, university, and external service to foster their professional development.

Under thermofluids science track, particular attention will be given to candidates with research interests in cyber-physical energy systems and sustainable energy. Under mechanical and manufacturing systems track, candidates with expertise in human-technology frontier applications as well as advanced manufacturing, modeling and control of complex systems will be given serious consideration. The departmental has over 1,750 undergraduate and 120 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The present faculty size of 28 is expected to significantly grow over the next several years through this search and other planned faculty hires. With a total annual sponsored program awards of about $6 million, the Department is home to several federally/state-funded centers. The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the seven departments in the UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering which has over 6,000 students and home to over 150 tenured or tenure-track faculty. The College also houses nine research centers and is active in the University’s four new research institutes. The College occupies well over a half million square feet of state of the art facilities, including the $300M Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014. Established in 1831, The University of Alabama (UA) currently enrolls over 38,000 students and employs over 1,700 faculty members in 13 colleges and schools. Today, the UA is the fastest growing flagship university in the nation, and ranked among the top 60 public universities in the nation.

Preferred applicants should have an undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. Additionally, applicants will have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field with research interests in the areas of thermal-fluid sciences and advanced computational methods. The successful candidate will teach existing undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and develop new courses as appropriate. The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally funded research program, be committed to scholarly activity, and be engaged in service to the profession and the university. The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate with existing faculty members within the department and across campus including those within the SimCenter: Center of Excellence in Applied Computational Science and Engineering. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their teaching competency and to articulate their plan to develop and sustain an externally funded research program. Qualified applicants with relevant industrial experience are also encouraged to apply.
