Despite the fact that pipelines are the safest mode of transportation, hazards, and threats occur during a pipeline’s lifecycle. These hazards and threats may result in an undesirable events or loss of containment and affect waterways or populations of people. If a pipeline release occurs, it can result in fire, explosion, and contamination of the environment that affects communities. Pipeline operators should establish processes to identify and analyze all hazards and threats with their corresponding root causes for evaluating and managing the associated risk (i.e., likelihood and consequence).
