The free and forced vibrations of cable segments typical of a skyline logging cable system are analyzed by assuming that the vibrating cable segment maintains a catenary shape, and energy expressions are derived to implement the Lagrange equation of motion. The results of this method are compared with finite-difference results published in the senior author’s PhD thesis and the accuracy and usefulness of the approach applied to more complex cable configurations are discussed.
