Abstract

The present study was conducted to measure skin friction in shallow open channel flows at low Reynolds numbers. The study was aimed at extending the database towards lower values of Reynolds number (180 ≤ Reθ ≤ 480) based on the momentum thickness. The validity of the semi-empirical laws characterizing the turbulent boundary layer is examined. The method for accurately determining the wall shear stress and hence the skin-friction coefficient in an open channel is verified.
