Widespread use of embedded computing in mechanical and other physical systems has lead to a need for new skills and attitudes on the part of engineers who are leaders and central participants in projects that lead to such products. In this essay I attempt to delineate that skill set, thereby identifying many of the subfields associated with mechatronics. The intent is to provide background for use both in design of curricula for educational institutions interested in mechatronics and control and to focus on research areas that will lead to advances in the art of mechatronics.
