Abstract

This paper describes and compares an experimental and a numerical method for shape optimization of continuum structures. The experimental method is based on a systematic application of photoelasticity. The numerical method is based on coupling of a finite element analysis and an optimizer. The paper demonstrate several means used for interactive communication between the designer and the (experimental or numerical) shape optimization process. The discussion is made taking shape optimization of a hole in a tall beam as an example.
